We spent the last few days in New Mexico. We had a great time and got to check another state off our list. On Friday we met up with an old friend of Mikes, Rebecca and her son Markus. We had a great time bowling and going to lunch with them. It was great to finally meet them in person. We thought we were going to hook up with them on Saturday so we didn’t get any pictures. We will catch them next time we are in town.
On our way to Santa Fe to go bowling we drove through this tiny little town off Hwy 14 called Madrid, NM, only about five or six blocks long, we decided we would stop there and look around on our way home. What an amazing little place. They have very unique little shops with whimsical handmade art. I picked up a Steampunk Fairy from one of the local artists and i just love it, I could have bought a ton of stuff from her shop if I had the money and didn’t live in an RV.
One of the towns main claims to fame is Maggie’s Diner which was featured in the movie Wild Hogs, a huge part of the movie was filmed in Madrid. Maggie’s diner was built as a movie prop on a vacant lot, after the filming the owner reinforced the building and it is now a very cool gift shop, of course we had to buy t-shirts. The Mine Shaft Tavern was also seen in the movie. When we got home we watched the movie. I liked the movie the first time I saw it but it was really cool to watch it after we visited Madrid.
Madrid, NM is on the Turquoise trail and they have some of the most beautiful turquoise jewelry I have ever seen. If your into turquoise this is the place to get it.
One of the things I love most about traveling is finding the “off the beatin path” places to explore.
On Saturday we went to Old Town Albuquerque and walked around the square. My favorite place down there is the San Felipe Church. It is beautiful inside and no we did not burst into flames. The church was originally built in 1706 I believe. You can read all about it here. There are tons of little shops, art galleries and restaurants. We stopped at Hacienda del Rio for lunch, it was pretty good food. We sat out on the patio.
We are now on the road again headed to Texas. I will update you soon.
